Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

The journey is quite serene and comfortable; the picturesque panoramic view of the Himalayan landscape of Nepal will be a magical sight for you. As you will land in Kathmandu, you will be received warmly by a representative of the Himalayan trekkers and will be driven to the hotel where you will be staying in.

Day 2: Kathmandu sightseeing & trek preparation
5-6 hrs

Soon after breakfast, the tour guide will be present in the hotel to pick you up for a delightful tour of the Kathmandu city. You will hit it off with the most popular landmarks of the valley including Bouddhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath Temple and Patan Durbar Square. After covering some of the popular sightseeing places, you have to stop to shop for our trekking equipment. It’s obvious that you will not have many ideas about the required equipment and so our tour guide will help you to shop the necessary trekking equipment by offering you his valuable suggestion.

Day 3: Scenic flight to Bhadrapur & drive to Ilam

Next day, you will head out from the valley of Kathmandu to catch the first flight to Bhadrapur. As the private charter bus is the fastest mode of transport to reach Ilam, so we choose this mode of transportation for your safest journey. Next, you will check into a comfortable hotel in the town and relax for the night.

Day 4: Drive to Taplejung & trek to Mitlung
4 hrs drive & 3 hrs trek

Your day will start early with a comfortable drive through the aromatic cardamom and tea plantations. The amazing view of majestic summits of the Kanchenjunga and the Jannu overlooking the valley in the distance will totally win your heart. As you will reach Taplejung, which will also be the very first stop for the trek, you will be introduced to the rest of the trekking crew. Post lunch, the trek will begin, where the trekkers will swiftly follow the descending trail to Tamur River and then towards Mitlung. Our trekking equipment for the following few days will include trekking poles to trudge through the slippery path of the trail.

Day 5: Trek to Chirwa
5-6 hrs

The region around the Tamur River offers one of the most spectacular views in the lush green valley. The availability of freshwater and the presence of fertile land make this region crucial farmland of the valley. Later, we will cross a narrow wooden bridge with the crew and cross the Thiwa Khola to finally follow the trek trail to Chirwa. It’s not only the ambiance of Chirwa that will truly entice you but the local bazaar and the hubbub of the crowd will also appeal to your senses. The crew will then set a camp by the village under the shade of siren boulders.

Day 6: Trek to Sekathum

Leaving behind a river, we will reach the check post of Taplechok (1,380m) where we will get your permit validated for the proceeding trail of Great Himalaya. We will be crossing a bridge to proceed along the floor of the dell and then you will come across scented plantations of cardamom. Post lunch at Phembu, the crew will ascend to Lelep, leaving the Tamur River behind us. To avail easy access to Ghunsa Khola Valley, we have to cross a suspension bridge, which is altogether a thrilling experience for us. Our crew will set up our camp at Sekathum, as it is the best position to catch the first glimpse of Himalaya.

Day 7: Trek to Amjilossa

The very first venture to the adventurous terrain of the trail begins from here. Narrow trails through dense forests and bushes of the Himalayan terrain will accompany you through the trail till we will cross Solima. After a quick lunch, you will ascend to the Amjilossa (2,510m), which is set above a gorge. The area in and near the gorge will also serve as your trekking trail for the remaining of the day.

Day 8: Trek to Gyabla through stone shelters at Thyanyani

Leaving behind Amjilosa, you will cross a bamboo forest to climb up a ridge. After a brisk walk on the small ridge, the trekkers will finally reach Thyanyani (2,400m), which is renowned for its stone shelters. The place is extremely beautiful and is set amidst the popular peaks of Himalayas. If you are a nature lover who loves to capture memories, you will have to reach for your cameras more than once when on this trail. The natural trail had several crests and troughs which you have to cross in order to reach Gyabla (2,730m) .

Day 9: Trek to Ghunsa

Crossing 3,000m, the trekkers will have to head towards the direction of Phole. Take a long leisure walk along the scenic green valley and enjoy the view of the rhododendrons and azaleas. The region of Phole is renowned for the presence of a monastery and its flourishing carpet weaving industry; in fact, the carpets from Phole are quite popular as souvenirs among the tourists and trekkers. After a tiresome journey, you will finally reach Ghunsa. The colorful prayer flags and numerous cozy wooden houses portrayed a very visually aesthetic picture for the tourists.

Day 10: Acclimatization day & explore around Ghunsa

Max Altitude: 3,595 m

You will have to spend the day mountaineering at the Lobsang La Pass, climbing the elevated formation. It is among the best methods of acclimatization to boost the confidence of aspirant trekkers and calm the nerves before climbing the Kanchenjunga Base Camp. You can have a mesmerizing view of Rhododendron and the vegetation will make you feel the change in the climate. After reaching an elevation of 4000m, you will have to descend to Ghunsa where the campers will spend the rest of the night.

Day 11: Trek to Khambachen (4,050m).

To reach Khambachen, you will have to head to the north of Ghunsa and climb your way through evergreen pine forests. The path will be strewn with numerous evergreen and deciduous forests which will offer a complete Himalayan experience. The culture of the region is highly influenced by Buddhism and it is quite evident from the presence of several Mani walls and chortens in the area. Next, you will enjoy your lunch at Rampuk Kharka and admire the scenic pleasure that will surround you. Once, you will start moving upwards, you will we catch a clear glimpse of the north of Jannu and later as you will descend to Khambachen, you will get some time to stretch your legs for the rest of the day.

Day 12: Rest/ Acclimatization day

We choose to make it a rest day for the entire crew. Not only will you get a chance to relax your feet but also to enjoy the scenic beauty of the village of Khambachen. The trekkers will thoroughly enjoy the leisure walks through the village and you will love capturing the moments in pictures. Later, you will spend the night hanging with your fellow trekkers in front of a campfire at the campsite. This break is a necessity to recharge our body before hopping onto the next trek to reach Lhonak.

Day 13: Trek to Lhonak (4,785m).
1 Hour

Next, you will head towards Ramtang (4370 m), marching across one of the typical wonders of the region, a solid lateral moraine. It has sheets of ice that are melted and hardened over time. The terrain of moraine will be gorgeous yet quite dangerous to maneuver. As your guide, we suggest against going there alone. The crew will come across another moraine once you will head to rockier terrain that is located on North West of the Kanchenjunga Glacier.
You will have to leave it behind you to reach Lhonak. The campsite for the night will be stone huts to rest in and you are surely going to be pretty excited to rest in one of them. We will make sure that you are lucky enough to reach the place before dusk so that you are able to catch a view of the Wedge Peak (6802 m), Mera (6364 m), Nepal Peak (6910 m) and the Twins (7351m). Day 14: Trek to Pangpema, Kanchenjunga North BC (5143m) and return to Lhonak

As we will be in our next trek, you will come across another moraine, which is supposedly derived from the mighty Kanchenjunga glacier. Towards the end of the trekking for the day, the trekkers will have to ascend through steps to reach Pangpema, which is the Kanchenjunga Base Camp. Just by sitting in a shade, you can fall in love with the majestic charm of the peaked shade, simultaneously relaxing your throbbing feet. All our fellow trekkers will retrace their path to Lhonak from Pangpema. On reaching Lhonak, you will have to spend the next of the night catching up on your sleep to recover before the next trek to Makalu Base Camp.

Day 15: Return to Ghunsa (3595m)

You will descend, retracing your steps back to Ghunsa, after recovering yourselves through the night at Lhonak.

Day 16: Rest/Spare day
1 Hour

It is after two weeks of vigorous hiking, you will finally get the chance to rest your body and soul for a day. The numerous sights and activities surely have overwhelmed your soul and so the break will be quite relaxing for all. You can spend your day repacking and arranging our things and charging the batteries for your camera. Post lunch you can take a short stroll through the village of Ghunsa which will be your campsite for the day.

Day 17: Trek to Nango La Camp (4,160m).

After returning from the main GHT trail from Ghunsa, the next stop was Phale. To reach Phale, we have to cross flat terrains of a valley strewn with pine trees and green pastures. Our campsite will be quickly set up in Kharka.

Day 18: Crossing Nango La Pass (4820m) and trekking to Yangma Khola

The day will start early this day, so you have to suit-up accordingly before beginning the trek. Almost half of the day will be spent on hiking up to the Nango La Pass. The immense scenic beauty of the Himalayan peak, Lopsang will make you halt for a while to capture its essence in pictures. From this location, you can also able to catch a glimpse of the southern side of the Kanchenjunga. Leaving behind the northern Thasa Khola and the valley of Yangma Khola Valley, our crew will reach the spot of our camp for the night.

Day 19: Trek to River Camp (3,700m).
1 Hour

It will be a day of river confluences and leisure trekking. We will follow the trail along the Yangma Khola, which is situated somewhat below our camp. Further, we will follow the western bank of the river until we are finally at the Tamor Khola. The trekkers will continue from there following a trail along the northern bank of the Tamor Khola and will finally arrive at the Olangchung Gola. The village happens to be one among the prosperous mountain villages of Nepal that run trades with Tibet. After enjoying a scrumptious lunch at the Olangchung Gola, we will set out to continue our trek until we arrive at Dingsamba Khola. We will pitch our camp in the grassy area of the region by the running stream and spent the rest of the night relaxing. The campsite is popular among the trekkers and thus, named as Campsite River.

Day 20: Trek to South High Camp (4,450m).

With the hope of crossing the Lumba Sumba pass, we will set out from the River Camp to cross the broad valley basin and reach the floodplain which often gets affected by the overflowing of Dingsamba Khola. The trail will comprise of numerous flora that makes up a spectacular view across the floodplains and the black rock bands. On entering the high valley floor, we will help you to pitch a camp for the night.

Day 21: Trek to North High Camp (4400m) via Lumba Sumba Pass (5136 m)

The trek to a steep rocky trail up to a plateau began at sunrise; up there we were awestruck by a panoramic view of the Lumba Sumba in distance and a clear lake in the valley. It took about an hour to cross the 1 – 2 pass of the Lumba Sumba. The trail through the pass will offer a terrific view of Makalu, Jannu, and Kanchenjunga. Through the pass, you will descend with our crew to the Lapsi Khola Valley and later, will set-up the camp for the day.

Day 22: Trek to Thudam (3,550m) with overlooking Makalu.

You can catch an eyeful of glimpses of the Makalu on your trail to the twisty valley of Lhapsi Khola. The brilliance of nature is quite evident in the picturesque masterpiece; the presence of rhododendron bushes seems to add more colors to the landscape. On crossing your trail, you will reach the Tibetan village of Thudam, where after a short break you along with the fellow trekkers will reach our campsite that is just across a bridge. And finally, you get to pause for the night.

Day 23: Trek to Kharka (2,750m).
1 Hour

Landslides are pretty common in the Thudam, so you need to take extra caution while crossing the trail, the rocky region and dense forest. The trail leading to the gorgeous Medokchheje Khola is quite adventurous; the presence of narrow rocky trails, waterfalls and shaky log bridges will add more thrill to the experience. Before reaching the campsite at Kharka, you have to cross quite a number of pastures and a pass on the trail.

Day 24: Trek to Chyantang (2,190m).
1 Hour

Following the GHT routes and taking a muddy trail you will have to descend to the Arun River, where the team can rest their feet for a while and enjoy the lunch at the same time. After a while, you will cross a nearby bridge and reach the village of Chyantang which is your campsite for the rest of the night.

Day 25: Rest day.

Day 26: Trek to Forest Camp (2,900m).
1 Hour

We start with climbing a ridgeline that will lead to minor pass elevated at 2,710m, the trail continued up the hill and a second ridge which will bring us to Tojo Khola. Now we take the route towards its east bank to reach our campsite, Forest Camp. The trail will be bestowed with moss-covered rhododendron forests.

Day 27: Trek to Molun Pokhari (3,950m).
1 Hour

A good 1000m will be covered by our crew on this day. You have to scramble your way out on the rocky trail and trudge through a forest to reach an open area from where the Arun River is visible on the south. The trail is strewn with plateaus and several chortens that are put up there by the locals. By the time you will reach the Molun Pokhari Lake, you will be already spellbound by the picturesque vision of the blue sky and the crystal clear lake. Unfortunately, we cannot set-up our camp on the spot so we have to walk a bit further to our campsite.

Day 28: Trek to Dhunge Kharka (3,590m).
1 Hour

We will trudge along the trail to reach a ridge from where towards the south-east at about 4,200m up, is a pass. After climbing up the pass, we will descend and walk past a small lake and stream and cross the Dhunge Khola.

Day 29: Trek to Cave Camp (3,900m).
1 Hour

You will stop at the unusual campsite at the Cave, which is set among scenic caves and locales. The trail is set through a narrow path, dense forest, riverbank and a fork beneath the cliffs. The view of the region is so amazing that you will surely end up taking a few more pictures than you intend to.

Day 30: Trek to Kalo Pokhari (4,200m).
1 Hour

As you prepare yourselves for another day of covering an adventure of climbing hills and treading narrow trails, you will leave the campsite to reach your next stop. The trail will keep us on our edge as it is extending between two streams. The trail offers a pretty view. In fact, the trail is a perfect opportunity to engage in a conversation with other fellow trekkers, in short, it was a perfect bonding moment. The trail stretches a long way and traces numerous uphill and downhill routes. We will cross the trail to reach a shallow valley which we have to climb next in order to cross another solid ridge to finally arrive at the famous Kalo Pokhari. It is a famous lake in the region and is mostly renowned for its black water.

Day 31: Trek to Kharka (4,100m).
1 Hour

Although, the net elevation that will be covered is not much on this trek but the trail will comprise of steep descents and difficult climbs. We have to carefully pass through ridges along the trail to finally reach the valley which was a popular campsite. The rest of the night will be spending at Kharka.

Day 32: Trek to Yangla Kharka (3,560m).

If you stray a little away from the campsite, you will find the dangerously situated Mumbuk Teahouses in the valley. Following the lush green trail through the nearby forest, you will follow the route towards the northwest. Leaving behind swift-flowing streams and dense forest we will finally reach the Barun Khola to Yangla Kharka with our trekking crew.

Day 33: Trek to Langmale Kharka (4450m) through the yak pastures.
1 Hour

Here, you get the chance to see the yaks and you are surely not going to be disappointed. You can see plenty of them when you will come across the yak pastures. This Sherpa dwelling trek is slightly higher in altitude so you have to slow down to acclimatize in the thinning oxygen supply. We will have to pause to rest at Langmale Kharka where the camp for the night will be set.

Day 34: Trek to Makalu Base camp (4,870m).
1 Hour

The journey to the Makalu Base Camp will probably be the second most crucial expedition of the trek. The trail offers a breathtaking view which you can admire and witness the most with a scrumptious lunch at the Base Camp with a backdrop of majestic Mt. Makalu. Post lunch, the crew have to head to Langmale Kharka where we are supposed to stop for the night.

Day 35: Trek to Dobato (3,800m).
1 Hour

Later we will descend into Barun valley and trace our path through the large area of land that is overlooked by Peak 6 and 7. The region is prone to landslide, so you really need to be extra careful to avoid any falling rock.

Day 36: Trek to Khongma (3560m) via Shipton La pass (4,170m).
1 Hour

Retracing our trail from Dobato, you have to climb the Keke La, which serves as an open pass at the Kalo Pokhari Lake. Later we will climb the Shipton La again. The trail of terrain will serve as an unusual formation of a stone staircase decorated with rhododendron bushes. At the end of the trail, our crew will reach Khongma before night falls and we will proceed to set our camp. This lengthy trip is also going to offer you a pretty clear view of the majestic Makalu and Kanchenjunga.

Day 37: Trek to Seduwa (1,540m).
1 Hour

Now we will be covering a distance of about 2,000m at a go while moving from Khongma to the Tashigon Village through the region of Chipla. On the way to Seduwa, you will notice the village of Chipla to be thinly populated and mainly covered with trails of terraced fields. Chipla is a crucial checkpoint for hikers who intend to enter or leave the Makalu-Barun National Park.

Day 38: Trek to Num (1,500m) crossing the suspension bridge.
1 Hour

In order to return to the Arun River, we will leave behind Tashigon and cross the trail through fields, jungle and a suspension bridge across the river. The engineering wonder will offer a spectacular view of the region. Next, a steep ascent of 1,500m to Num will be covered by us to reach Tumlingtar again. The view from Num will be truly an amazing one as we can see the entire region from up there.

Day 39: Rest/spare day.

After a rigorous venture of hiking, we will take a break from any sort of draining physical activity for the day. You can spend the entire day resting your feet and enjoying the scenic beauty of the capped Himalayas around us or strolling in the beautiful location amidst the mountain.

Day 40: Return to Tumlingtar.

We are going to start the day with an early drive through the rough and rustic terrain of the Himalayas in a jeep. The colorful view of the terraced fields and crowded markets of Khandbari will make your journey to Tumlingtar a perfect one.

44-50 min flight

Accommodation

Himalayan Trekkers promises to manage the best, most comfortable and preferable accommodation.

Generally, in cities like Kathmandu, we arrange basic three-star facilities. If available, you can opt for a more budget-friendly option or upgrade to a more luxurious hotel by paying a little extra. 

Although all the places might not have all the modern facilities, we will make sure to arrange safe and comfortable accommodation. In general, hygienic and safe tea houses/local lodges/ home-stays with all the basic facilities are arranged. But you can, if possible, personalize according to your preference. 

If your itinerary includes camping or you choose to experience camping during your travel, a proper camping-site will be pre-decided. If required, we also provide the basic equipment which is refundable. Please check the Gear-List and Requirement List for more information.

Meals

Breakfast is usually included with your B&B Accommodation within the cost that is evident.
For other meals in the city, you would have to pay separately. Often in the cities, you can choose from many different cuisines and varied food services. We can always help you find the right place to fit your taste.

In more remote areas, usually, there are not many options. But you can always find hygienic and well-prepared food. Moreover, almost all the meals during the trek are included in the cost. We can help you make changes according to your preference and budget, but only if choices are available!
On top of that, Himalayan Trekkers also organizes Welcome and Farewell Dinners as a symbol of warm greetings.
