Chulu Far East Climb, Tilicho Lake & Mesokanto Pass Trek Overview

This trip, Chulu Far East Climb with Tilicho Lake & Mesokanto La Pass Trek is a combined trip from Chulu Far East to Mesokanto La Pass and passing through the Tilicho Lake. Though, it is not so popular trail till date but is considered to be one of the top trail preferred by those who love the high level of adventure. It will surely be a very unique experience.

The route goes like, at first you accent to Chulu Far East which lies at 6059 m above the sea level. Then, you head towards Tilicho Lake in Manang Valley. You can take pictures here, as this is one of the most peaceful and heavenly places on Earth. Further, you head towards Mesokanto La, which is situated at 5099 m. At last, you end your trek at Jomsom.

During the trek, you will encounter with the different ethnic group such as Gurung, Thakali, Manangi and Marginalized Group.

(Note: You can use the same equipment throughout the trek. Thus, this is a cost-efficient trek as well.)

Chulu Peak lies in the Annapurna Mountain to the Northside and Manang Valley to the South. Actually, Chulu Peak is divided into three wings, Chulu East (6584m) Chulu West (6419m) and Chulu Far East (6059m). Among these three wings, Chulu Far East is considered to be the easiest one for climbing.

Nonetheless, all the peaks are physically challenging yet highly demanding. Thus, the trekkers require enough mountaineering knowledge and proper skills before attending to do the trek.

The commencing point of this trek is by the Bank of Marshyangdi. The valley around the river lies in the tropical region. The trail then takes you gradually towards the subtropical region followed by Lower temperature, an Upper temperature to the Subalpine Region and lastly to the Alpine region.

Mesokanto La lies at 5340 m above sea level. It is the joining pass between two very popular and beautiful valleys, Marshyangdi and Kaligandaki.

Marshyangdi River

This river is popular for whitewater rafting as this river has a rapid flow of water.

Kali Gandaki River

It is the deepest gorge in the world, as it separates the two highest peaks in the World, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri. Kali Gandaki Valley is the valley lying on the bank of Kali Gandaki River. It is also known as the Windy Valley. People from different parts come here, in search of gold particles in the river.

Tilicho Lake

Tilicho Lake is situated in Manang district. It is one of the highest altitude lake lying at 4919 m above the sea level. You will surely fall in love with Nepal, once you reach Tilicho Lake. At such a high altitude, you will get the peaceful surrounding and heavenly feel. It lets you forget all your fatigue and tiredness after reaching here. (Note: This is a tentative itinerary. Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
30 Min Drive to Hotel

You will meet/ greet by Himalayan trekkers representative. Check-in at the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu
Full Day
Max Altitude: 1350 M

After breakfast, you will start your sightseeing in the Kathmandu valley. The places you will visit are Swoyambhunath (the Monkey temple), Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, and Boudhanath. After that, we leave you on your own to prepare for next day trek. You may buy the necessary equipment for yourself. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 3: Drive from Kathmandu to Bhulbhule

Max Altitude: 850 m

After your breakfast, you are driven to Bhulbhule. It lies on the Western part of Nepal. It takes about 6 hours by private transfer.

You drive to Besisahar passing by the bank of Trishuli River. An hour off-road drive from Besisahar takes you to Bhulbhule. Overnight at Guesthouse/ Tea House.

Day 4: Trek to Syange
5-6 hrs

You start the trek after breakfast, by crossing the suspension bridge from Bhulbhule. The glimpse of Mount Manaslu can be seen on the trail which continues by the bank of Marshyangdi River. You can even see the waterfalls and paddy fields on your way. You reach Syange passing through forests, climbing on steeper hills. Overnight at Guesthouse/ Tea House.

Day 5: Trek to Tal
6-7 hrs
Max Altitude: 1,710 m

After breakfast, we climb to Jagat. It is a very steep climb along the dusty jeep roads. But, the beautiful waterfalls and forests will still make your trek wonderful. You reach Tal, with an uphill and downhill walk. You can see the impression of Tibetan Culture and tradition in this place. Overnight at Guesthouse/ Tea House.

Day 6: Trek to Bagarchhap

Max Altitude: 2,080 m

In comparison to the previous day trek, today's trek is a little easier. Firstly, we trek to Dharapani from Tal, for a walk of about 3 to 4 hours, after the morning breakfast.

Dharapani is the intersection point of Annapurna trekking region and Manaslu Trekking region. Its climatic condition is mostly of lower temperature, thus, is suitable for vegetation and farming.

Day 7: Trek to Chame
5-6 hrs
Max Altitude: 2,710 m

Your today's trek takes you to the Headquarter of Manang district, i.e. Chame. To reach Chame, you trek through Danaque, Timang and many other beautiful places. You will be mesmerized by the Rhododendron forest, on your way. You will also get the view of many rocky cliffs and other popular peaks like Lamjung Himal (6983m), Annapurna II (7937m) and Annapurna IV (7525m). As per the name, Manangi people are the core ethnic group settled in this area.

Day 8: Trek to Pisang

After breakfast, you start the trek. From Chame, you walk on a rocky and steep trail and reach Bhartang. You need to cross a suspension bridge between the pine forest and trek for another two hours to reach Pisang, surrounded by Pisang Peak and Chulu Peak.

Day 9: Trek to Ngawal
6-7 hrs
Max Altitude: 3,657 m

Being a steeper route, trekkers will enjoy their trek from Pisang to Ngawal as you will get to encounter the amazing scenic view of Gangapurna, Pisang peak, Annapurna II, Annapurna III and Chulu peak on the horizon. On the contrary, you can view the Marshyangdi valley at the deep bottom. On the other hand, the trekking path is comparatively easy with the existence of smaller ups and downs.

Day 10: Trek to Chula Base Camp
4-5 hrs
Max Altitude: 3,910 m

After breakfast, we leave Ngawal to ascend towards the Chulu Base Camp which is an isolated path. On the way, you can view crop fields, Pine forest, prayer flags, and many Chortens and Manis built beautifully.

You will see a closer and breathtaking view of Pisang Peak and Annapurna III.

Day 11: Acclimatization at Base Camp

For the preparation of next day trek to Chulu High Camp, today you acclimatize at Chulu Base Camp. You can relax, take pictures of the beautiful surrounding, and enjoy the peaceful nature and Mountain View.

Day 12: Trek to Chulu High Camp
7-8 hrs

Today is the main day of your trek, as you will be reaching the Chulu High Camp.

In order to avoid the unfavorable weather condition, you have to start the trek as early as possible.

The path is grassy for the first few hours. It then changes to a rocky path with few hints of snow. Furthermore, you need to climb on the snowy slope to reach The Chulu High Camp. You will get a closer view of Annapurna ranges as you keep climbing.

Even though the landscape is dangerous, we try to choose the safest place to set our camp for overnight.

Day 13: Summit Chulu Far East & return to base camp
8-9 hrs

In order to avoid unfavorable weather and increment in temperature, you can start your trek as early before 3 a.m.

Ultimately, you reach your goal, one of the most beautiful peaks in Nepal, The Far East Chulu Peak. You can have a close view of various mountain ranges like Annapurna I (8091m) Annapurna II (7937m), Annapurna South (7219m) at the south and Manaslu (8163m) at the east with numerous other peaks panoramically.

But, you have to be quick in taking photos and enjoying the view as we have to descend back to the Base Camp in order to avoid bad weather condition. Stay overnight at the Base Camp in fixed Tent.

Day 14: Trek to Manang

After breakfast at the camp, it's now time to say goodbye to The Chulu Base Camp, where you stayed for 3 days.

Today, our target is to reach Manang Valley, which has the largest human settlement. Manang valley is a very picturesque place. It has its own unique culture and tradition. Therefore, we suggest you explore the area on your own. You can interact with people, try their foods, and share your experience about your trek so far

Day 15: Trek to Siri Kharka

Today, after breakfast, you leave the Manang valley taking back lifelong memories you gained here.

After walking for about 2 hours, you reach Khangsar Valley, which is equally beautiful. You then continue your trek Siri Kharka passing by an old Gompa.

Day 16: Trek to Tilicho Base Camp
5-6 hrs
Max Altitude: 4,140 m

We have to alert you about today's trail as it is a rocky and narrow slope and there are the chances of rockfall. But this risk is worth taking as it takes you to the base camp of Tilicho Lake. The massif icy ridge can be seen from here. As per the availability, you spend overnight either at a lodge or if not available you have to spend the night on a tented camp.

Day 17: Trek to Tilicho Lake

After breakfast, we trek from Tilicho Base Camp towards Tilicho Lake. Tilicho is the highest altitude lake which lies at the foothill of Tilicho Peak. But, unfortunately, remains frozen for most of the time in a year.

You see the beauty of nature, once you reach Tilicho Lake. The nature has gifted us such a beautiful Lake at such a high altitude. You can have a different experience to stay at a tented camp nearby Tilicho Lake.

Day 18: Trek to Yak Kharka via Mesokanto La

Max Altitude: 5,340 m

Today's trek begins by first climbing the Northern ridge of Tilicho Lake commonly known as Eastern Pass at an altitude of 5360 m. After enjoying the scenic view of many mountains like Ngadi Chuli, Bouddha Himal, Annapurna II, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Nilgiri, and Gangapurna, you then head towards the Western side.

The path is very slippery due to the presence of loose rocks, so you may need the help of ropes crossing some of the areas.

There are three possible routes to reach Jomsom, but you take the route from Mesokanto North, at an altitude of 5350 m to reach Yak Kharka (4,200m) today.

Day 19: Trek to Jomsom

Enjoying the magnificent view of Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, and Dhampus, you descend towards Thini village. You can see the cute little Juniper bushes along the way.

You reach Jomsom, after a short walk from Thini Village.

Day 20: Scenic flight to Pokhara

You take a short flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, after having breakfast in Jomsom.

You can relax on your own in Pokhara, or troll around the Lakeside. Go for boating on your own.

If you need to do Laundry, then, it is available in Pokhara. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 21: Scenic flight/ drive to Kathmandu
30 mins flight/ 6-7 hrs drive

Today after good breakfast, you can either drive or take a flight to get back to Kathmandu.

After reaching Kathmandu, you can move around in the streets of Thamel. Thamel is a touristic street, so you can buy souvenirs from here.

In the evening, we will take you for a Farewell Dinner and drop you back at your hotel. Overnight at Hotel.

Although all the places might not have all the modern facilities, we will make sure to arrange safe and comfortable accommodation. In general, hygienic and safe tea houses/local lodges/ home-stays with all the basic facilities are arranged. But you can, if possible, personalize according to your preference. 

If your itinerary includes camping or you choose to experience camping during your travel, a proper camping-site will be pre-decided. If required, we also provide the basic equipment which is refundable. Please check the Gear-List for more information.

Breakfast is usually included with your B&B Accommodation within the cost that is evident.
For other meals in the city, you would have to pay separately. Often in the cities, you can choose from many different cuisines and varied food services. We can always help you find the right place to fit your taste.

In more remote areas, usually, there are not many options. But you can always find hygienic and well-prepared food. Moreover, almost all the meals during the trek are included in the cost. We can help you make changes according to your preference and budget, but only if choices are available!
On top of that, Himalayan Trekkers also organizes Welcome or Farewell Dinners as a symbol of warm greetings.
