Chitwan National Park (CNP) is the oldest National park in Nepal which covers an area of 952.63 sq.km. Situated at the inner Terai lowlands, it was officially established in 1973 and was entitled as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
Until the early 50s, the national park used to be a royal hunting reserve for the Nepalese and foreign aristocrats. Due to increment of human settlements and poaching activities, endangered animals such as one-horned rhino and bengal tigers, strict measures are taken to preserve them.
As CNP was declared as a conservation area it's now home to more than 500 of these various wildlife, being the major highlight of the this park and is of one the major tourist destinations in Nepal.

The most notable are the Bengal tiger, one-horned Rhino, swamp deer, Gangetic dolphin, and many more. Similar to other national parks in Nepal you can do jeep safari, Elephant safari (nowadays in the Tharu village as private elephants are not allowed inside the park), bird watching, and canoeing/boating in the Karnali River, the longest river in Nepal.
